Shot List
Target Audience
In our opening thriller we decided that are our target audience is 15-24 years old. To show this we decided to include a lot of suspense as
this is what we believe the targeted audience look for in a thriller film. We have classed this as an 15 license rated film due to the variety of strong violence it contains and discriminating language and behavior. Information can be found at http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/15

We see our opening thriller for the target audience that are fans of the thriller genre such as films like "The Woman in Black" directed by James Watkins and the film "The Hole" directed by James Dante as they are Thriller/Sub-Horror that contain the similarity of suspense and violence.
Also the main character that the audience sees in the opening thriller is in the age range leading to the audience having a connection with the character.
Furthermore, the setting where we are going to film (in the woods and machinery room) makes it appealing to this audience as it is the stereotypical thriller locations as they appear eerie and they provides tension which the audience seeks in a thriller film.
In addition the character will be wearing a jogging outfit as this will appeal to our target age group. Gender wise we see the idea appealing mainly to the female gender as the main character is female. However, this film will also appeal to male gender as the tension and suspense continues throughout the thriller.
Despite no verbal language, the facial expression and body language will play a key role in the opening film and will appeal to the target audience. For this to work the actress must consider that her character is a 17 late teenage girl.
The main premise of the thriller is the suspense and the unknown which we see as engaging to our main audience.

Setting, Sound & Costume - Sophie
Setting
We have two settings we plan to use for our thriller opening:
(1) Woods
A woodland area with a path (big enough to comfortably run on, but small enough to still look confined). At this stage we are thinking of filming in a public woods/footpath in East Grinstead.
(Pictures to come)
(2) Machinery Workshop (flashback)
Unlike the woods, the shots used are going to be less based on the setting and more close ups of significant actions, props and characters. Therefore, the actual setting of this isn't a massive issue. However, if we are going to film the woods section In East Grinstead, we plan to film the flashbacks in a workshop that is owned by my parents which contains machinery; lots of metal, dirty setting, loud noises etc.
(Pictures to also follow)
Sound Planning
Beginning:
We plan to use both non-diegetic and diegetic sound to create suspense in our thriller opening.
The first few shots of the opening will be some establishing shots of the woods where the women will be running. Here we want to have no non-diegetic sound, just an eerie silence to create suspense as the shots set the scene. In the short cuts of the women running, (place between the establishing shots) we will again just have diegetic sounds (ei, footsteps, panting, sound of crunching on frosty floor - these may need to be enhanced by using Foley sounds).
On the second shot of her running (this will be a full body shot - audience realize it is just a women on a run and not a chase scene - anti climax) we will bring in some kind of happy music as a non-diegetic soundtrack to accompany her running.
Middle: Women starts hallucinating/getting dizzy
To accompany the shaky camera work, and mysterious appearance of a dark figure in the woods, we want to add some kind of eerie, hypnotizing kind of music to play while the happy soundtrack quietens. An example of the kind of eerie sound I mean is below:
This music will occur every time she begins to loose balance/ hallucinates.
The women is then going to stop at a cross section in the woods and take her earphones out, this is where we plan to transfer the happy running music from non-diegetic to on-screen diegetic sound leaking from her earphones.
As she looks around (shown by a panning 360 POV shot & a POV shot from the perspective of someone watching here from behind a bush - suggesting she is being watched), we plan to cut out all the music and return to the eerie silence from the beginning establishing shots. Our hope is that the contrast from loud, running music to the eerie silence will create suspense for the audience, expecting something bad to happen.
Costume
Over all we want the costumes of the characters to be representations of young people today, creating realism for the opening and therefore making the characters relatable (especially the young women)
The Women (Running):
We plan to dress her in a stereotypical running/fitness outfit. For Example:
-Fitness Trousers
-Matching jumper with a basic top underneath
-Running Trainers
-Her hair will be tied back in a simple ponytail
-Visible trainer socks
-Headband (hold hair out of face)
-Sweatbands
Additionally we could add to this costume items such as:
-One of those arm bands/hip belts that can hold a mobile phone.
The Women ( In Flashback)
We additionally see the women in the flashbacks. However, we don't want to reveal completely in the opening, that she is the women from the flash back. Therefore, we will not be filming any shots of her that will be in focus enough to resemble her.
But we will most probably dress her up in dark clothing, maybe ripped.
The Man (Unknown):
We want there to be significant mystery around this character. Therefore we plan for him to be in all black (or dark clothing), this alongside some low key lighting should create the mystery that we are hoping for.
In addition we want him to swear some kind of cap (still keeping to the dark colours), this is to ensure there is always some kind of shadow hiding his face and therefore creating enigma.
So so far, our plan is:
-Black jumper/big coat
-Black/dark trousers
-Black boots - Dr.Martins (these need to be distinctive, as we will use aspects of costume like his shoes to reveal him in the present day from the flash backs)
-Black baseball cap.

In the shots in the second setting (the flashback) we will have a mixture of diegetic noices to accompany the images on screen. For example, machinery, metal scrapping against each other, quiet wimpers (from a a women/late teens), footsteps etc.
There is going to be no character dialogue throughout out opening, apart from the women panting (from running).
The non-diegetic sound, either me or Alex (music students) will create something on garage band, although we will all contribute towards ideas as to what we exactly want it to sound like.

Props, Hair and Make Up
Props
-ring - buy/use one of our own. This will be used to link the flashbacks and the present day of the short film together, it will signify that it may be her in the flashbacks and will raise questions for the viewer.
-fake blood - buy. This will be used at a minimum as we don't want it to look over dramatic and unrealistic, it will mainly show in 2 shots.
-machinery - Sophie's dad. As the flashbacks take place in a dark room we will be using Sophie's dads workshop which is full of machinery parts, it will add more mystery and heighten the tension and curiosity of the viewer.-headphones - use our own. Simply used for the running scenes and to justify the change of non diegetic sound to diegetic as the music will be heard through the headphones.
-phone/iPod - use our own. Again used for the running scenes and for the change in sound.
Hair
when female character is running:
Her hair will be tied back and neat to highlight she is not running away from someone she is simply running as a hobby.
when female character is 'taken':
Her hair will be down, knotted and messy to show she has been through a struggle and suggest she has possibly been there for over 24 hours.
male character:
His hair will hardly be shown as he will be wearing a cap/hood to cover and shadow his face this adds mystery and keeps him unknown.
Make up
female character when running:
It will be natural looking and simple to be realistic.
female character when 'taken':
she will have running mascara to look like she has been crying and we may make it more exaggerated to highlight that she has been taken against her will even more.
Story Synopsis
Opening sequence:
-establishing shots of the woods -frosted morning - no non-diegetic sound to begin with - eerie silence with only diegetic sound that is present when recording.
-sudden shots of lower torso running - making audience expect a chase - shots resembling danger
-non diegetic sound starts as female character enters the shot - unexpected, anti-climax as she isn't being chased.
-various shots of her running through the setting
- she suddenly slows down
-pov shot to show she is getting dizzy/feeling faint
-jump cuts to machinery almost blurry
- she carries on running, the jump cuts continue to reveal other machinery & another character (male, unknown, mysterious)
-returns to shots of her running until she comes to the cross section of the woods
- camera following at side view, she stops but camera continues then follows back to show her unsteady
- she takes her headphones out non diegetic sound becomes diegetic
-she pauses the music and a eerie silence begins
- pov of someone watching, possibly high angle/hidden behind a bush or tree
-360 shot of her, looking around, holding her head, possibly falling to the ground
- jump cuts of disturbing scenes starting to reveal a woman being attacked by the male character (both identities unknown) shows the machinery, shows a ring with unknown female character in background.
-flashing to and from the present day and the flashbacks
-the shots build to become faster confusing audience, builds tension
-suddenly stops with her hand on the floor pushing herself up off the ground
-various shot focusing on her hand that has the ring
- shot of her hand on a tree then a final flash to the same shot but with blood on her hand.
-returns to her taking her hand off the tree, putting her headphones in and continuing to run.
-over the shoulder shot of a character watching her as she runs past
Overall story:
Main female character has been taken before but escaped and her kidnapper was arrested. She gets home after her run and sees on the news he has been released early. He then appears at random points in her day to day life watching her and later into the film she is taken again but the investigation for saving her isn't as straight forward as the previous time. The kidnapper sets a time limit setting up clues but never is revealed until the very end of the film where we see him as a normal citizen in a family friendly neighbourhood, the camera pans through the house down to the basement where we see a dark cage and a hand grab the bars with the ring on. end of film.
